I just realized that I forgot to update and say that Ben and I went to see Batman Begins last weekend. I definitely liked it -- I mean, there is always a little bit of cheese in any superhero movie, but overall I would definitely recommend it. I'm not a movie critic like
etiphany, but I thought I'd just add my two cents. I know some other people didn't like it so much, and maybe it's just because I am a huge Batman fan in general (aside from the movies), but I definitely preferred this movie to, say, Spiderman 2 (which I thought was way too cheesy/sappy).
The animated Batman series is still my fave though. ;) And I think those of you with similar minds to mine (
rhoddlet perhaps) will definitely enjoy Dr. Crane (maybe I'm just a sucker for insane villains).

Date: 2005-06-23 12:29 am (UTC)As far as comic book movies, I liked Spiderman, but I didn't like Spiderman 2 (maybe I was just having a bad day, but Ben agreed with me that it was waaay too sappy and would have been better without all the plot and with more action), I liked both X-Men movies, and I don't think I ever got around to seeing any of the other ones . . . Oh, I saw the Hulk, but thought it was weird, because the old Incredible Hulk TV show is something I used to watch a lot. Batman, in general, holds a special place in my heart though. ;)

Date: 2005-06-23 02:02 pm (UTC)Dude, I'm just an amateur reviewer who doesn't know Fellini from Antonioni from Tortellini from Fettucini. :P Your opinion is just as valid as mine.
I actually own Spiderman 2, but have not brought myself to watch it yet. I don't generally like the female characters/love interests/romantic tension-generators in these movies. Kirsten Dunst? Ehhh. Katie Holmes?! Ughhh. And the jury is still out regarding Christian Bale as Batman ... I can't seem to shake the American Psycho image ... he treads a fine line between caped crusader and nightmarish menace -- which is what he's supposed to do, I guess. I'm a fan of Dr. Crane though. That guy is one creepy shrink. I wanna be just like him. Just kidding. :)

Date: 2005-06-23 02:47 pm (UTC)Hahaha, well, I know my tortellini from my fettucini, but I've never heard of Fellini or Antonioni. BTW, is your computer clock right? Because you didn't post this comment yet, apparently.
I know what you mean about the love interests . . . They are the worst part of the movie, IMO. Katie Holmes, to me, will always look like a high school student, so she wasn't the most believable as a DA (she doesn't look old enough to have graduated from law school, much less to have been promoted enough to get high-profile cases, or maybe I just know too much about DAs since my dad was one). And the scene at the end that was supposed to be the conclusion of the love story for the movie kind of came out of nowhere, I was like, oh, they're supposed to be in love? I thought they were just childhood friends (which would have been more believable).
And Kirsten Dunst, well, after seeing how incredibly stupid she is on Celebrity Jeopardy (she ought to change her name to Kirsten Dunce), I have lost any respect for her I ever had. She's pretty though. :p The love story, IMO, totally ruined my enjoyment of Spiderman 2. It would have been better as a straight-out action movie. I got the same feeling from it that I got from The Matrix, where it's an action movie, but trying to be something deeper, and failing miserably, and it would have been better had they been more set in the action genre.
As for Christian Bale, I've never seen any other movies he was in (except apparently, IMDB tells me he was a voice in Pocahontas, which I did see), but it's true that Batman is supposed to be far more of a nightmarish menace than a caped crusader (something I don't think George Clooney would ever be able to accomplish in a bazillion years). I thought he was good. The only voice that really sounds like "Batman" to me though is the one from the cartoons. :p I googled some stuff about Batman and I was looking for info about Dr. Crane/Scarecrow from the comic books, and I found someones blog where they were like "Oh, Dr. Crane! You can lock me up in your asylum any day!"

Date: 2005-06-23 03:06 pm (UTC)It's good that you liked it, though. The animated Batman cartoon was the best, dammit, and I'll fight all who disagree.

Date: 2005-06-23 03:36 pm (UTC)I need to get my hands on some comics, but like, the kind that are free or something. Do public libraries carry this stuff? I was more of a Nightwing comic fan than Batman, so the only Batman arc I ever really read was Knightfall.
If I remember correctly, there were at least a couple of animated Batman episodes about secret Asian fighting schools. In fact, since I have about 50 episodes of that show on tape, I probably have them. My favorite animated Batman episode is still the two-parter about Two-Face though. Hey, is that show out on DVD?
