So the other day at the gym one of the TVs had a music video station playing with the closed captioning turned on, and I caught a glimpse of the lyrics to Soulja Boy's "Crank That (Soulja Boy)." Of course it's been stuck in my head ever since.

For those of you who are unfamiliar, this song is horribly catching and with the stupidest most nonsensical lyrics ever (except perhaps for the "drops of jupiter" song, which still wins for nonsensical lyrics). For example, the chorus (with some lyrics that I got online, some printed as they were shown on TV):

Soulja boy up in this ho
Watch me crank it
Watch me roll
Watch me crank that soulja boy
Then superman that ho
Now watch me youuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu [Can you believe the closed captioning said this?]
(crank that soulja boy)
Now watch me youuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu
(crank that soulja boy)
Now watch me youuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu
(crank that soulja boy)
Now watch me youuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu
(crank that soulja boy)

There's also an instructional dance video on youtube:

Somehow I get the feeling music like this is going to be one of those things we laugh at in 20 years, like Hammer pants or doing the "Kid 'n Play" (AKA the Funky Charleston, according to wikipedia).

Oh man, I'm suddenly imagining the person doing closed captioning for BET and falling out of my chair.

That sounds like the kind of joke that The Boondocks TV show would do... then again, any joke about BET sounds like a joke The Boondocks would do.

Also, at the risk of being an arrogant whiny punk, didn't Drops of Jupiter have a fairly coherent concept? I haven't heard it in a long time, but I seem to remember it being about a guy whose (girl?)friend has gone off to experience a bunch of stuff and become more worldly... and all the celestial/sky imagery was him being hyperbolic about what amazingly deep things she (seems to think she) has done and how totally sophisticated and better than him she (acts like she) is now.

It was a little over the top in some places, but... if we're going for purely nonsensical, my instincts say there has to have been *something* worse on one of the 'ol funball playlists. Maybe something Conor was a big fan of when he was younger. ;)

HAHA. So Dr. Talone (my co-teacher) teaches AP Statistics to the seniors, and one day they turned the lights off and were practicing the dance to this song, and I thought they were just having a fun day, but then during an assembly they actually acted this out for the school, and all the seniors were up on stage and a few profs including Dr. T. were up there dancing to it with them, and yeah, it was pretty funny. So I am extra-amused by this. :)
