dental advice

My last cleaning was a year and a half ago (I know, I am a bad person), and I think not only do I really need a cleaning, but the chances of me having at least one cavity are pretty darn good considering my record (I think I have genetically bad teeth, I usually have a cavity every year and a half or two years). I do not have dental insurance since I am too old to be covered on my parents' insurance.
I can buy dental insurance through school for $192 for the year. This covers ONE cleaning and ONE dental exam, plus a partial set of x-rays, and 50% of the cost of silver fillings or root canals. Someone sent an email to the grad student list saying that it is actually 50% of the "allowable charge" for fillings, which is actually about 35% less than what the dentist charges.
I also just found out that a local community college that has a dental hygiene clinic will do cleanings, an oral cancer screening, periodontal exam, and flouride treatment all for $10.
The question is: do I buy dental insurance through school and hope that I have enough cavities to make it worth it, or do I go to the community college for cleanings and then pay the full fee for a dentist to do fillings? How much does a dentist charge for fillings anyway?
