Much has happened, but to spare my wrists I'm not going to write it all down (sorry!). Good times were had in LA, including good food and time spent with friends and family. Much cooking and baking was involved and I made a very successful almond yule log. The haul for Christmas included a lot of great stuff, including a tempurpedic pillow, earrings, and a 6-month subscription to Netflix (all from Ben), among other things. Netflix was used immediately to watch the first disc of the American Gothic TV series (which I LOVE, if you are a fan of weird/creepy stuff I highly recommend, it's like a cross between a horror movie, a soap opera, and Northern Exposure) and the first Batman movie (the Tim Burton one) which I had never seen. Those are in the mail going back and we are eagerly anticipating Space Ghost: Coast to Coast.

New Year's eve was spent wandering around town, I went ice skating at the downtown rink while Ben stood on the sidelines and held my shoes, and we ate deep dish pizza on Federal Hill. Then we came home, watched TV, drank a bottle of wine, and fell asleep promptly after barely making it to midnight to say happy new year.

I recently got around to sorting through my cooking magazines and organizing my recipes, and as a result we have had some good food lately. Most of the recipes are from Cooking Light. Plain fat-free yogurt is my new all-purpose ingredient in baked goods. A little while ago I made oat bran yogurt blackberry muffins (barely any oil, since the yogurt does the trick), and tonight we had corn bread made with yogurt, also very yummy. In other food news, last night I made a delicious spiced orzo pilaf and smoked salmon knishes, and tonight we had chicken tortilla soup (with the cornbread). Tomorrow will be kung pao chicken (at least, the Cooking Light approximation). We also made red lentil stew, recipe from Ben's mom, which was very yummy. If any of you are interested I can post any of these recipes (they're all pretty easy to make and healthy).

I am trying to handle the winter cravings for comfort foods by eating a lot of soup instead, and having my only baked goods be ones I made at home and made healthier than usual (via yogurt, oat bran, flaxseed, etc).

Oh, we also got this 5 grain hot cereal (Bob's Red Mill brand) which is teh yum. Oatmeal alone is too boring for me to eat regularly, but this stuff has enough different grains in it to be super-yummy. Wednesday I think the gym will be open again so we can get back to work. I am counting my blessings that I didn't gain any weight over Christmas despite eating a large number of cookies, chocolates, meals at restaurants, cakes, and other bad-for-me foods (like my aunt's extra-rummy eggnog, mmm).

In an effort to finally fix my wrists I won't be writing in LJ too much, but I am reading it. So anyway, I wish you all a happy new year!
