Asia trip status
Jan. 5th, 2004 08:32 amThings are coming together nicely! We're still waffling on Bali (terrorists, cholera, whatever -- the US has a travel advisory against Indonesia). Other than that, it looks like I'll be able to pull off a 45-day trip around Asia (including a totaly of more than two weeks in Japan) for about $5000! That's $1600 for airfare, about $600 for hotels my first two weeks in Japan and Hong Kong, and about $500 for youth hostels the rest of the month in other parts of Asia (plus ass-cheap hotels in Thailand, I don't trust a hostel that's $3 per night!). Add in eating, which probably shouldn't cost more than the hotel rooms, and I'm at $3800 (I think this is an overestimate). Add in a two-week Japan railpass for about $450 (depending on exchange rate) and I'm at $4250. I'll probably spend a good deal of money on souvenirs and admission to museums and other sites, so it should be around $5000. Luckily I have $9000 in my savings! Hopefully this means that I won't be totally broke when I get back.
The only thing I'm worried about is having to charge things to my credit card, because my limit is like $2500 which really isn't very high . . .
And I also need to plan out the first part of my trip in Japan. I'm getting to the Osaka airport on June 5, and leaving from Sapporo June 17. The plan is to somehow take railroads up Japan and stop at interesting places on the way, such that I have a few days in Kyoto and a few days in Hokkaido. Later in the trip I'm returning to Japan to visit Tokyo, so we want to avoid Tokyo in the first part. Can anyone who's been to Japan give me advice on how long is necessary to see the sights of Kyoto and Nara, where are interesting places to visit in the middle of Japan, and what there is to do in Hokkaido?
