How did I manage to bruise the bottom of my toe?

Is it reasonable for me to cross grad schools off my list because (a) their application crashes my web browser, when I'm using IE on a Mac, and/or (b) I can't navigate their website well enough to even find the department I'm interested in?

What do I do if it turns out that like MIT is the only school that's doing the kind of research I want to do? Call them up and beg and plead?
